University of Washington Botanic Gardens Plant CSI Series: Why Does my Japanese Maple Look so Bad? (1.75 CEUs)
Tuesday, July 11, 2023, 9:00 AM - 10:45 AM PDT
Category: E-Learning

Become a Plant Crime Scene Investigator (CSI)! Learn about key plant diseases and insect pests that can cause problems for favorite trees and shrubs in the landscape.

Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) are wonderful specimen trees in the landscape, showing off many form and color variations. Yet often stems will die back, and sometimes even large limbs or an entire tree will die. It sometimes appears to happen overnight! This 1.75-hour online course will help you identify common maple diseases and insect pests including bacterial blight, verticillium wilt, maple anthracnose, nectria canker, phytophthora root rot, aphids and scales. Non-chemical management methods will be discussed, including proper irrigation and pruning techniques.
