As principal designer at Santa Barbara Garden Design, Joan specializes in designing colorful, water-conserving landscapes in Santa Barbara and Goleta that make the most of the many beautiful Mediterranean and California native plant species that thrive in temperate climates.
Joan has been committed to creating gardens that attract wildlife, save water and contribute to a healthy environment for 25 years. In 2013, she was one of the first designers in the nation to receive designation as a Certified Wildlife Landscaping Professional by the National Wildlife Federation.
Joan also spreads her love of plants through freelance writing. She received her masters degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism and has written freelance articles about gardening for more than 30 years. She currently writes Edible Garden columns for Edible Santa Barbara, posts In the Garden features on her blog and has written literally hundreds of articles for newspapers, magazines and websites across the country.
Joan is active in the Santa Barbara County Horticultural Society, served on the board for four years and is currently editor of the society's monthly newsletter. She is a long-time member of Garden Writers Association and regularly attends GWA's national symposiums to learn about the latest trends in gardening and design.
