Pioneers of American Landscape Design Garden Excursion: Celebrating the Modernist Parks and Gardens of Robert Royston
When: May 9-10, 2008
Details: The Cultural Landscape Foundation has announced that the first Pioneers of American Landscape Design Garden Excursion will focus on the work of Robert Royston. The two-day, “curated” tour will offer a unique opportunity to visit and learn about the public and private landscapes of one of California’s leading Post-War landscape architects from Robert Royston himself and his biographer, J.C. Miller. Attendees will visit Royston’s firm, Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey for an enlightening overview of his work and a rare chance to see a collection of his paintings and drawings. The excursion will also include a curated tour of Royston’s innovative public and private commissions in the Santa Clara, Richmond, Palo Alto, and Mill Valley areas led by Mr. Miller. Rounding out the experience, the tour will conclude with a private visit and reception to Mr. Royston’s own extraordinary garden which includes a cantilevered deck that overlooks Mount Tamalpais in Mill Valley.  Proceeds will benefit the production of TCLF’s Oral History module dedicated to the life and legacy of Robert Royston. To purchase tickets, please visit http://tclf.org/events/royston_excursion.htm. This event is co-sponsored by the ASLA, Garden Design magazine, and Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey.

How will this affect our most treasured and permanent landscape plants - our trees? Explore a selection of adaptable landscape trees and see some memorable examples of how adaptable they can be to urban conditions, poor drainage, soil problems, and that "gorilla in the closet" concern for the future: heat and drought. We will emphasize Midwest native species, but also touch upon some others to consider, or to avoid. The speaker founded Starhill Forest Arboretum in central Illinois and has propagated, studied, and written about thousands of different types of trees during the past 50 years.Visit http://www.mobot.org/ for more information.  Visit the Members Only section to view available CEUs.
