COUNTRY GARDEN FOR ALL SEASONS
The commission to design this landscaping plan was a wonderful opportunity. The owners had purchased six acres of land along a gravel road. Having started their married life as farmers, the demands of managing a manufacturing business made this secluded country property especially appealing. They built a rustic cedar home back a winding lane near century old oaks. Ten years passed and they still dreamed of a log cabin retreat with no television or telephones. With the husband's long hours at work and frequent business trips, his wife was concerned they would never "get away" to enjoy it. Building their retreat right at home seemed the best solution.

The husband wanted this log cabin to be hidden from view as you entered the property on the main drive, while containing ample parking for entertaining visiting business clients, extended family, and church groups.

His wife envisioned the entire area from the existing drive, to the cabin, becoming one large garden with small lawn areas. A larger grassy area near the cabin would be surrounded with flowering shrubs, small ornamental trees, and perennials, all blooming in a mixture of colors from early spring through fall.

Each morning she wanted to walk through the garden and find new surprises. For her grandchildren, she dreamed of an arbor leading to a playhouse with a picket fence and old-fashioned flowers. Designing a plan that would please both of them was my challenge.

Trees had already been planted along the drive and our clients had planted some evergreens and shrubs in the area. (Note existing plants on the plan.) The new drive for parking and the walking paths (both stamped concrete and mulch) were designed to wind around these plants and connect to existing traffic patterns on the site. Fourteen foot tall spruces and pines were brought in by tree spade, while a few existing evergreens were moved. Each plant was carefully chosen. Sturdiness, longevity of seasonal interest and requirements for sunlight and water were all considered. Balance of height and color during each blooming season was especially important for each perennial area.

Was the plan successful? If the number of weddings that have taken place in the lawn in front of the log house is any indication, the answer is yes! From the sunny cabin porch area, to the shady tree canopy spots, our client can be found outside, enjoying and caring for the garden, nearly every day, when she is not traveling with her husband.

For the past ten years, we have continued to work together in the garden's ongoing development.
As a designer, this property is my secret pride and joy. Our clients value their secluded spot just as it is, hidden away for them and all those whom they invite to share it with. I can photograph the garden, as long as I promise not to reveal the owners' names or the property's location. Only their friends and family know for sure!
